How is my Credit Card Verified?

Once you add a credit card to your Paymate profile we send two small transactions (a debit and a credit of the same random amount) to your credit card account. This enables us to ensure it is a ‘valid’ credit card account and allows your bank to perform a security check. If your bank rejects these ‘test’ transactions, your credit card will not be verified and you will need to contact them to determine the reason.

When I use my credit card to send money, will I get charged a cash advance fee?

No, you will not be charged a cash advance fee if you are using your card for a genuine purchase from an authorised Paymate Merchant. Paymate charges your credit card the same way a business does, you will be charged for the transaction amount plus a buyer's fee. Using your credit card for other purposes or to advance yourself or associate money is a breach of our Terms of Use. Penalties apply and we can terminate your account if our Terms of Use are breached.

What should I do if my credit card or credit card transaction is rejected?

If your credit card is rejected, you should follow the instructions in the error message you receive. The instructions change based on the reason for the rejection, so they are usually your best guides. In general, you should do the following:

  • Check your information. Make sure the credit card number, expiration date, and billing address that you have entered into the billing section of the payment form all match the information for the credit card you are currently using.
  • Use a different credit card. You may be able to charge a different credit card more successfully.
  • Contact your credit card issuer. Your credit card issuer should be able to answer questions about your credit card account and explain why you are having difficulty charging a    purchase to that particular card. If there is a problem with your account (such as being over your limit, using an expired card, etc.), your credit card issuer will be able to identify that problem for you.

How can I safeguard myself against credit card fraud and charge-backs?

Paymate has implemented several safeguards and uses world-class technology and specialist services to address the risk of Internet fraud, especially in the use of credit cards. Paymate does not provide your credit card details to the seller and all such sensitive data is held securely in encrypted form (see our Privacy & Security policies). We constantly review both buyers and sellers, their credit card and bank accounts and their payment behaviour to minimise these risks.

When a credit card buyer is not satisfied with the goods received, they can request their card issuing financial institution to 'charge-back' the payment to the merchant and refund the amount paid. Paymate recommends that a buyer attempt to resolve their dispute with the seller before initiating a charge-back. Your auction site provider may help resolve such disputes. Most auction site providers also insure against non-delivery or misrepresentation of goods - buyers must explore all these options before initiating a charge-back. Paymate can terminate services to buyers who fraudulently initiate charge-backs or do so without having attempted to resolve disputes according to these guidelines.

Paymate Merchants must safeguard themselves against fraudulent buyers - your Merchant Kit, provided by Paymate Client Services on registration, will provide advice and guidelines to be followed. Paymate Merchants bear the responsibility for charge-back's, as per our Terms of Use. Paymate can also terminate services to sellers who engage in fraudulent sales, do not deliver goods on agreed terms or misrepresent their goods.
