Mail/Telephone Sales - Virtual POS Terminal
Paymate is pleased to offer a new service to sellers who may receive orders over the telephone or in the mail. Mail Order/Telephone Order (MOTO) Payments are useful for sellers who may receive orders offline but have a valid authority to debit a customer's credit card for the payment. This secure online service can also act as a Virtual POS terminal for merchants with small volumes, saving costs of equipment and line rental.

Conditions of Use
Paymate does not encourage this method given the risks of fraud and the exposure of sensitive credit card data. We recommend sellers ask their buyers to use the Paymate Express payment button on our home page to make a payment wherever possible.
However, sellers can apply for this MOTO service and on approval by Paymate enter customers' details to seek authorisation of payments. Conditions apply and the seller will need to maintain records of authority and comply with security procedures to protect cardholders' information. You will also need to upgrade to an eBusiness account for which there is a monthly fee.
Please use the form here to apply for the MOTO Payments Service, providing information as below.
What types of sellers will be permitted to use this service?
Paymate will assess the risk before approval of the service on a case-by-case basis. This will include the category of products or services being sold and the track record of the seller with Paymate. Payments for high-risk categories like computers, mobile phones, etc will not be accepted.
Can Auction or Website sellers use this service?
No. We require the credit card holder to make the payment on our secure web site for all auction payments. If you have a website, please add Paymate Express payment to it so buyers can make an online payment as normal.
Can I set up Recurring Payments via the MOTO Service?
Yes. This will be an option you can select when submitting a MOTO Payment. Please refer to the help page on Recurring Payments for more information on setting up a Recurring Payment.
How do I apply?
Firstly you must register at www.paymate.com as a seller and accept our Terms of Use. Then use the form here to request the MOTO Payments Service. Please give full details on why you require this service:
- Why your buyers cannot pay you online via your website or ours
- Categories of products/services you are selling
- Location you are selling from (shop, client premises, marketplace)
- Average payment per sale
- Expected total value per month
- Your web site URL if applicable
- How you propose to capture and store order details
- How you propose to capture credit card details and destroy them after processing.
Paymate Client Services will then email you with a decision, usually within three full business days. If approved, the MOTO Payments tab will be enabled in your Paymate Account(normally greyed out).
What are the charges?
If approved, you will need to upgrade to an eBusiness account for which there is a monthly fee. There are no application fees or additional transaction fees to use this service at this time. Normal transaction and any account fees will apply. Please see our fees page for your country.
Once approved how do I access and use this service?
Log into your Paymate account and click the MOTO tab under Payments. We then require that you follow these procedures:
-
Capture telephone orders by entering all details of the buyer's personal and credit card directly into the Paymate MOTO payment page and submit it for online risk assessment and bank authorisation. This will avoid writing down credit card number and expiry details.
-
If you have orders handed, faxed or mailed in to you with the buyer's card details, please 'black out' the credit card details after entry into the MOTO Payments page and submission. You should file the signed order page securely in any case for future referral.
-
Please ask the buyer for their email address and include this in the MOTO Payment page so that the buyer is informed by Paymate when their card is debited and when you are paid. If the buyer does not have an email address, please enter
This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
as their email address in the MOTO Payments page.
-
Always ensure the buyer is clear about the authority they are giving you to debit their nominated credit card and the amount of the debit. If you are taking an order with a recurring payment, the order form must spell this out very clearly, including the frequency of the payment and the expiry date or date of last payment.
-
Please ask the buyer for their email address and include this in the MOTO Payment page so that the buyer is informed by Paymate when their card is debited and when you are paid. If the buyer does not have an email address, please enter another alternative email address that you have for your own business.
-
Always let buyers know the payment will be processed by Paymate. (That is the name that will appear on their credit card statement for AU and NZ sellers. Payments to US sellers will also show the name of the seller on the cardholder's statement).
-
Never leave details of the credit card unsecured.
